Smart Shopping 101: Product Testing & Rebates
What is product testing?
Product testing is when brands send out products for people to try in their real, everyday lives. In return for the free product, users give their honest feedback about what they liked and didn’t like. Sometimes products are full-sized items, sometimes they are samples, and other times, they are coupons to redeem in-store.
Are these products free?
These products often cost you little to nothing out of pocket, but they are not truly “free” because you pay with your time, attention, and opinion. You’re expected to follow the campaign instructions, use the product as directed, complete reviews, provide photos, or complete surveys on time.
What are rebates?
Rebate programs provide a partial or full refund on your purchase of a product with proof of purchase, often in the form of submitting a receipt. Instead of a discount at the register, rebates give you money back later through digital payment (Venmo, PayPal), prepaid gift cards, or in rare cases, a check.
When will I get my rebate?
Most rebate programs give a timeframe in the fine print, and it can range from a few days for simple digital rebates to 6-12 weeks for the occasional mail-in rebate. Processing usually happens on business days, so weekends and holidays can and will slow down the approval and payment of rebates.
Do you have any tips for product testing?
- Keep records, including screenshots, emails, receipts, and any photos you take, safe in case you need to resubmit something. I would suggest using your hobby email (separate from your personal one) to keep up with your documents.
- Always read instructions and deadlines carefully, so you know what is expected of you when selected for participation. It’s also important to keep safe online and make sure you know how your data is being used! Some programs may use your photo on their website and social media, so make sure you are comfortable with that if you apply!
- If you have any questions about the product or the process, feel free to reach out to the product test host! They are usually happy to help and do so in a reasonable time.
What about tips for doing a rebate program?
- Rebates are like product tests that don’t always require your review by the end of the campaign. Sometimes, rebates are offered directly by the company just to give you a chance to try the product and see if you like it, and they hope to have you buy again in the future!
- Since rebate programs aren’t selected from a list of applicants, sometimes they are capped at a certain number of rebates. This means there is a rare chance that if you wait too long after finding an offer, the rebate quantity could be depleted before you submit yours - ALWAYS check to see if the offer is still valid BEFORE heading to the store to purchase the item!
- Don’t combine rebates! This is typically against the rules and can result in one or both being declined. You may lose the opportunity to participate in other programs later on!
Ripple street: chatterbuys, chatterboxes, and refunds
- Ripple Street is an app that lets you apply for product testing opportunities from your phone and submit everything you need there.
- Chatterbuys are programs where a gift card is sent to your home for you to purchase the product with.
- Chatterboxes are programs in which the product is mailed directly to your home, OR a coupon is mailed to you for you to redeem in-store.
- ReFUNds is what they call their rebate program, and theirs are a bit different - in a good way! You can claim your spot BEFORE purchasing the product. No sweating about it running out while you’re at the store! You typically have 48 hours to submit a receipt once you claim a spot.
Social nature: cash back for healthy choices
- Social Nature is a rebate website that has a collection of rebates to pick from based on your location and what health food items are offering programs at that time.
- Social Nature requires you to shop in-store and submit a paper receipt - shopping online does not work with this website!
- Things to expect to see include vegan dishes, gluten-free products, energy drinks, and sometimes baby food. There is always a chance for something brand new to be there as well!
- They typically have a fast payment once your receipt is submitted. Make sure you take a clear, bright picture, as this will speed things up. I usually get mine within 24-48 hours (not including weekends)!
Aisle: a quick way to check for rebates in-store
- Aisle is an app-based rebate distributor that keeps track of many of the rebates you find on ads when scrolling social media, though some of those are exclusive to advertisements!
- Aisle is a great tool for finding quick cash-back opportunities on items you may already be seeking out. A great way to save is to check and see if what you need has a possible alternative with a rebate.
- A tip for Aisle is to, if possible, break up orders that have the same product in multiple different offers. Sometimes it won’t recognize two offers for the same brand in one receipt!
- Also, make sure you get all the rebates you purchased when you get the confirmation text - sometimes the AI messes up! All it takes is mentioning the brand name and/or product, and it’ll do a double-check to see what it missed.
